THE LIPIZZANER IN ART ***
Early Lipizzaners came in a variety of colors including spotted, piebald, palomino, and chestnut. Later, the dominant grey gene took over and this was encouraged by the fact that the monarchy preferred the whitest horses. However, the occasional bay or black is still around, and I'm told there are still the rare chestnuts to be found in some of the Hungarian lines . The Spanish Riding school always keeps at least one dark bay or black Lipizzaner. Most of these exquisite paintings were done by Johann George von Hamilton.
